About Me

Hi! I'm Ruby and I am a double major in Anthropology and Biochemistry. I was a member of And What!?, a hip-hop dance group for femmes that centers Black identity, for three years and served as Co-chair for two. I will always cherish this group as it allowed me to truly be myself and connect with so many of my closest friends through our shared love of dance. Alongside &!? I loved being a part of all things Oberlin dance from Kinetik, an urban dance group, and several senior dance projects, to being involved in multiple showcases such as Colors of Rhythm, collaborating with OSLAM for their annual Grand Slam, Student Dance Showcase, Fall Forward, Spring Back and working with so many incredible student choreographers throughout. If you've frequented the local, Kim's, or the Feve we were bound to cross paths, and I will always cherish all of the amazing people I've met throughout my time here. Working for CDS has given me such an appreciation for how hard the staff at Oberlin works to provide for us. Thank you. While this pandemic has left us with a surprising and difficult end to our time here I will never let go of the connections I've made on this campus.

Favorite Place

Warner Dance Studio. I have had so many memorable moments in that space. From deep conversations to laughing until I can't breathe to sobbing because it was a senior's last performance that I couldn't imagine being at Oberlin without. That dance studio has meant the world to me and a big shoutout to Dan for being an amazing human!

Favorite Class

Culture Theory with Crystal Biruk and honestly all the classes I've taken in the ANTH department. Professor Biruk is one of those teachers that encourages you to be the best student you can be, but is also so understanding of the complications that can come with student life. I will always remember the thought provoking atmosphere this class fostered.

Memorable Oberlin Moment

There are too many to count, but Movie Fridays with my baseball boys junior year, meeting my best friend Bella after she was forced to join &!? sophomore year, making eye contact at a freshman hall meeting with another life long friend after someone said their favorite ice cream flavor was vanilla, and jumping around in a circle in the midst of a group hug screaming "We're gonna be best friends forever" in the science center, senior year.
